The AG’s 2020 municipal audit report shared insights of the mismanagement of funds, poor governance, and weak accountability measures that characterise many South African local governments.

The extent of illegal, irregular and ineffective spending reaches billions of rands, within the context of an increasingly unsustainably stretched national fiscus. The results, “make for very weak accountability and the consequent exposure to abuse of the public purse”. 

The accountability crisis within local government mirrors the accountability crisis within the energy and power sectors.
